Day 3…Thursday 28 February

An action packed Day 3 out in Spain, and the boys managed to fit in a bit of golf, a nice relaxing (!) bike ride and some sofa sprints…

An early morning flight from Gatwick airport, saw the lads arrive at the Resort to beautiful blue skies…

There were some thinking that Gurjit Sandhu, Adam London and Ravi Patel may have got stuck at the airport because they definitely didn’t really see them on the pitch…well that’s one insider’s thoughts anyway!

Hello and welcome to Pinky’s diary and my final diary of the season! After a long, hard few months of preparation, the days had ticked down to August 25th – Finals Day! After appearing at Hampshire in 2010 and Edgbaston last year, this time I had to get my jabs and cross the border as county cricket’s showpiece day was taking place at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff – and of course that meant county cricket’s showpiece event – the annual Mascot Derby!

While I had performed OK at my previous Finals Days, I was determined to go a few better and take home some silverware this time, so since the end of the group stages of the FL t20 competition, I’ve been locked into a boot-camp just so I could be at my physical and mental peak for the big day. Along the way I’ve had a bit of help from a few friends – and a few who are no longer friends – who’ve driven me into the ground in my months of training. I was lucky enough to call up one of my good friends, and one of Middlesex’s sons, who took time out of his busy summer to help out.

While I was running around Bushy Park in Teddington (one of my favourite runs in Middlesex), a local athlete ran up to me and asked for my help with his training – apparently he had a couple of big races coming up. I was glad to help out, and he promised to do an ‘M’ for Middlesex sign in my honour if he won. I wonder how he did?!

So anyway, after all of the preparation, I finally paid my money for the Severn Bridge and arrived at the SWALEC Stadium. It was my first time in Cardiff, and it was nice to get there and have a good look around. Luckily the sun was out, and I was able to take my seat and say hello to all of the other mascots and watch the first semi-final, between Yorkshire Carnegie and Sussex Sharks.

It was good to catch-up with all of my old pals, most of whom I hadn’t seen since last year’s race, and it was clear to see just how seriously all of them were taking this race! Carnegie’s Max Mynah had been part of the Republic of Yorkshire’s official Olympic training camp, and was determined to add another golden postbox to the county. Our race was due to take place during the break between the first semi and the second one, and while we were enjoying the fours and sixes of Jonny Bairstow’s excellent innings, the tension was growing before we were called to our dressing room to get ready.

As part of the entertainment for the crowd, comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner was filming videos that were being shown throughout the day on the big screen, and he came into our dressing room before the race to profile us racers. It was great to meet him, and he freaked me out with an uncanny impression of Derbyshire’s Freddie the Falcon!

After getting our running spikes on, stretching and psyching up, we were led out around the pitch to meet and greet some fans, where we posed for a lot of pictures! About 200 rowdy Yorkshire fans later, it was finally time to go, and we were finally able to set foot on the SWALEC pitch. This year there were 15 of us, all in varying shapes, sizes and species, but all with one goal – taking home the prestigious Mascot Derby Trophy.

Our course was simple – starting off with a clamber through the ball-pit, before a bounce over the giant wicket slide, leading to a loop of the inflatable ball, then under the scramble net before a final leap over a giant bat and a dash for the line. Simple enough? Not really! All in all it’s a complete lap of the outfield, which is a long way, especially with big feet and heavy fur! But I’d been in training and I was confident – this was my time!

As always, the man in charge was David “Bumble” Lloyd (along with help from the man of many voices, Rory Bremner), and he got us off and underway as we all raced for the lottery of the ball pool. The ball pool can make or break a mascot race – one slip can see you getting trampled by a flurry of fur and feathers – and unfortunately I fell victim to the treacherous balls and lost my footing, only to see the other mascots bounce past me! Oh no!

After hopping out of the ball pool towards the back of the field, I knew I had a lot of catching up to do. And while I had overtaken a couple of my rivals over the slide and around the ball, I was surprised to see that somehow I’d managed to catch up with the frontrunners at the army-assault course style net. How had that happened? Well, luckily enough for me, the first mascot to reach the net was Lanky the Giraffe from Lancashire, and his famously long neck had got stuck, creating a backlog of mascots who couldn’t get past! The delay had allowed me to get back into contention, but now I had to wait for everyone else to squeeze through.

When I did my first mascot derby back in 2010, I spoke to a few of the other mascots in order to get inside information and tips of how to compete in the race. One piece of advice, from experienced mascot Eddie the Eagle from Essex had always stuck in my mind: “The first rule of mascot racing is to try and bend the rules as much as you can and see if you can get away with it”. And as I was waiting at the back of the queue to get through the net, that piece of advice suddenly came to mind. (Note to kids – Pinky the Panther does not condone cheating). So while the other mascots struggled to get past Lanky and his big neck, I decided to follow Eddie’s advice, and ran round the side of the net.

Sadly, it became pretty obvious that my plan hadn’t really worked, and I didn’t “get away with it”, as Bumble loudly pointed out to the crowd, but it was worth a try! And while I milked my approach to the line as the pantomime villain to a chorus of boos from the crowd, I turned to see that the home mascot, Dewi the Dragon was sprinting towards me! I turned and tried to race for the line, but Dewi was already at full pelt, and overtook me just before crossing the line, seeing him home in first place and taking the prized trophy! I crossed in second place, but sadly after a steward’s inquiry I wasn’t allowed to take the silver medal as apparently I had “breached numerous rules and regulations”. While I was disappointed with their outcome, in the interest of fair play I decided not to appeal or kick up a fuss, as I didn’t want to take away from Dewi’s moment in front of his home fans.

After the race, and the celebrations of the winning mascots, we all changed out of our racing gear and said our farewells until next year. It’s always fun to catch up with the gang, and while we all are at each other’s throats during the race (often literally), there is a lot of mutual respect between all of us, and we always enjoy our few minutes on the big stage. I know for one that I can’t wait for next year, and I could tell that all of the others feel the same way!

Once we were done all that was left was to kick back and enjoy the cricket, and it was an exciting afternoon of T20 action as Hampshire defeated first Somerset, and then Yorkshire, as they took home their second title in three years, before I jumped back into the Pinkymobile and over the Severn Bridge and back home to Lord’s, where I’m now getting ready for my winter hibernation.

So while I couldn’t quite take home the trophy, I’d like to thank all of the Middlesex fans for their support, as well as Jarhead for helping me out with my fitness work ahead of the big day. I’m sorry that I couldn’t get the win this time, but I’m looking forward to having another crack and hopefully lifting the trophy at next year’s Finals Day, and hopefully I’ll be joined by the Middlesex team too! As winter now draws in I’ll be wrapped up warm as I hibernate, but I’m looking forward to my first outing of the 2013 season at the first home T20 game already and hopefully I’ll see you there too!

Until then,

Pinky

A chaotic period of cricket for Middlesex CCC begins this week with our visit to Durham. After nine matches of this year’s County Championship season we currently lie well positioned in 5th place with games in hand over some of those above us. Without being too greedy our position could have been even better. Had we won our final LV=CC match before the Friends Life t20 cricket started, which we would have done but for poor weather, we would currently be sitting proudly in joint 1st position at the top of LV=CC Division One.

That we have made the start we have in Division One has been extremely encouraging and satisfying. We have played some excellent red ball cricket this season, showing the characteristics I want to see in a Middlesex team. The first thing a good side are is difficult to beat and, with the exception of our opening fixture against Somerset, we are proving to be this. Indeed, it was the confidence gained by two strong fourth innings batting displays against Nottinghamshire and Lancashire, performances that resulted in us finishing these matches as the stronger side, which allowed us to play as we did against Sussex and Somerset.

It was also reassuring to see the trait remain in the team after the break for T20 cricket. To come back strongly against Nottinghamshire for a second time, this time at Uxbridge, was a great effort.

That we enter the second half of the LV=CC season looking up rather than down is pleasing but Middlesex supporters can rest assured that we are not getting carried away with what we have so far achieved. We know that what has taken place is only a start and we hope to build on it over the coming weeks.

The two teams above Middlesex in Division One are Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. We are finished with Nottinghamshire this season but have two matches against Warwickshire so; ultimately, where we finish in the table is in our hands. An issue for every side is once again getting used to red ball cricket and the different attitudes that exist. In T20 cricket it is almost a crime for a batsman to leave the ball yet in red ball cricket it is a skill. It is therefore inevitable that batsmen go feeling for deliveries that they should and have previously left alone. It doesn’t help when you are playing on pitches similar to those encountered in mid April.

Once again we have played some very good CB40 cricket too, and but for poor umpiring we would be in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals. Even so we are still up there pushing for qualification. It is a bit of a quandary that we can fairly consistently play good CB40 cricket yet struggle in T20. As I write we have two CB40 games left and if we win both, which we are perfectly capable of doing, we may yet reach the semis.

If we don’t we will look back at the Lancashire game at Old Trafford and say what if. Yes, Eoin Morgan’s non arrival was a major setback and I take full responsibility for that. I was aware certain players were travelling up on the morning of the game and did nothing to prevent it. I should have. A lesson has been learnt.

Even so the game should not have been completed. When you get Sky commentators texting you to sympathise on the injustice that has taken place you know you have come out on the wrong side of poor decision making. I was not in Manchester but everyone I spoke to has said the game should have been abandoned as conditions were not fit or fair. Sadly, as the side bowling second we were the ones who were dealt a dreadful hand.

A big challenge for every side over the past few weeks has been maintaining team momentum and intensity. The problem is, of course, the weather. It is hard to feel motivated when on every day you turn up to play cricket the covers are on the pitch, the forecast is dreadful and all you are doing is wondering how much play you will get in before the next band of rain comes in. It is very depressing. In these situations it is hard to gain focus because there is nothing tangible to aim for on the horizon. It is inevitable then, that teams occasionally drift. The challenge for us is to overcome these obstacles to ensure we remain focused on what we could possibly achieve. This season could yet have a very special finish to it for us.

After a disappointing loss to the old rivals Surrey on Thursday, everyone was raring to go for our second match of the T20 campaign against the Sussex Sharks! It was Father’s Day which meant a family fun day at Lord’s, with lots of dads being treated to a day at the cricket! There was a party atmosphere from the moment the gates opened at Lord’s, with a fairground being set up on the Nursery Ground, with everyone joining in! And my old friend Sid the Shark from Sussex had come along too, which made the day extra-special!

There were all sorts of attractions for everyone to enjoy. There was face-painting, a coconut-shy, an archery target challenge, some stocks, and a bowling speed-o-meter. It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves, and with the sun out too, it made for a fantastic start to the day. I had a go at all of the various stalls, but didn’t do too well at any of them! My whiskers and fur meant I couldn’t get my face painted, I didn’t hit any of the targets in the archery, I didn’t knock over any of the coconuts in
the coconut shy, and my bowling was so slow I didn’t even register a score in the bowling speed-o-meter! However, the worst bit was when I was put in the stocks. As you know, panthers, like all cats, don’t like water, so imagine just how much I hated being pelted by loads of wet sponges! The worst one was when Middlesex and Ireland bowler Tim Murtagh came over to have a go, and absolutely pelted me over and over again! I had no idea that Tim could throw it so hard, as I’ve seen him bowl, and it’s even slower than me! After repeatedly smashing me very hard on the nose, Tim let me throw a few at him too, and there were quite a few lining up to have a go too! Thanks to Tim for being a great sport, and for helping to raise lots of money for our charity partners Shooting Star CHASE.

Once the game started, as usual I went for my walks around the ground to meet and greet Middlesex fans. However, because I’d been in the stocks, I was absolutely soaked, which meant I was getting noticeably less high-fives and hugs than usual. Oops! I finished my first innings lap of the ground next to the dug-outs, where I saw Sussex finish their first innings on 143, meaning the Panthers would need 144 to win.

After the rain on Thursday evening my interval race was called off, meaning my race against Sid the Shark would be my first of the season. After keeping an unbeaten record during races last year, I was really nervous as the pressure was on me to do well again this year, especially against a notoriously strong racer in Sid. Sid actually finished first in the Finals Day mascot race, before being disqualified after video evidence showed that he missed out all of the obstacles, cut all of the corners and got a lift on the groundsman’s tractor halfway round. Either way, I knew that he was a formidable opponent, so my knees were shaking on the start line was we prepared to set off (although that may have been hypothermia after getting my fur wet earlier on). It was neck and fin as we jumped over the three hurdles, and it was even closer as we turned past one cone and round another. With my paws still wet, I didn’t have as much of my panther agility as usual, but I was still able to come on strongly as we headed back for the finish, and I managed to just get back over the finish line first. I’d won!

I celebrated my win with a pint of milk, before heading back out to the pitch to see the Panthers reply. Sadly, despite a valiant effort from skipper Neil Dexter, the Panthers fell just short, with Liddle’s 5-17 being the stand-out performance for the Sharks as they won by 11 runs.

It was a disappointing end to a fantastic day at Lord’s, and hopefully the result doesn’t take away too much from the fun that everyone had. Fingers crossed all of the dads who were treated to a day out had a great time, and let’s hope Middlesex can get their T20 campaign back on track with wins against Hampshire tonight, and in our final game at Lord’s on Thursday against Essex. Come on the Panthers!

Until next time,

Hello and welcome to Pinky’s T20 diary 2012! After a winter of hibernation since last year’s Finals Day, and a few months of four-day and forty over cricket, the T20 competition finally started on Thursday night, which meant I was able to take to the field for the first time this season! And if my excitement wasn’t enough already, the Middlesex Panthers were taking on our south of the river rivals Surrey!

My day started, as always, with a 5 mile run. I’ve spent the winter keeping fit, in preparation for my mascot races during the interval of our home T20 games, and of course to prepare me for the Mascot Derby at Finals Day, which this year will be in Cardiff. After my run I took to the gym, having been given a personalised fitness program to work on by Middlesex strength and
conditioning coach Luke ‘Jarhead’ Woodhouse. I’ve been working closely with Jarhead over the winter, and he’s helped me reach the same fitness levels as the Middlesex players (although having seen some of them, I’m not sure if this is a good thing). I’m now so fast I can run from the Pavilion to the Media Centre and back in the time it takes for Ollie Rayner to solve a tricky maths problem or Paul Stirling to eat a Mars bar!

As for the team themselves, I know they’ve also been in practice ahead of the T20 matches. After a disappointing campaign last year, they’re all determined to turn it around and continue their great start to the 2012 season. New signing, and previous T20 winner Joe Denly has come in from Kent, and with both Gareth Berg and Dawid Malan (who were injured for most of last year’s T20) back to full fitness, our team looks a lot stronger, and we have a real chance of going far. Sadly our overseas signing Lasith Malinga has had to pull out due to injury, which is a real shame. I’d been practicing my ‘slinger’ delivery to celebrate whenever he took a wicket, but unfortunately he hasn’t been able to fulfil his contract. However, after a chat with our other overseas player Chris Rogers, I’ve been practicing a shuffle across the crease with my elbow over my face for every time our unorthodox Aussie manages to play one of his trademark back-foot blocks. I’m sure all of the crowd will be joining in in no time!

While the day started in bright sunshine, as the afternoon progressed it got much cloudier, and by the time it came to do the toss it had got very grey and drizzly. My first job of the day was to help out with the toss, and unluckily Middlesex captain Neil Dexter lost it, and we were forced to field first. However this didn’t seem to upset the Panthers, with us racing out of the blocks, and reducing Surrey to 32-4! However, this was the signal for rain to fall, and after the players returned, Surrey’s Gary Wilson and Matthew Spriegel recovered with a big partnership, which got them to 149-4, with both men recording half centuries.

After all of my preparation over the winter, I was raring to go for the mascot challenge at the interval, but because of the rain it had to be cancelled! I was so disappointed, both because I missed out on clowning around on the Lord’s pitch, and because I just love to entertain the crowd! Luckily I was still able to do my two laps of the ground during the game to say hi to all of the Middlesex fans (and a few Surrey ones too), and to pose for pictures, sign autographs and give people high-fives! It was great to see so many of you – even if a few of you did try to pull my whiskers off – grrr!

After a good start to their chase, Middlesex lost a few quick wickets, and fell a long way behind the Duckworth Lewis. When the rain eventually came after 16 overs, we were sadly 28 runs short of the D/L par, meaning Surrey won the game. The rain and the defeat meant it was a disappointing end to our first T20 game of the season, but hopefully the Panthers can pick themselves up and recover – there’s still a long way to go!

The perfect place to start of course is today in our next game. Sussex are the visitors, and as its Father’s Day there are a few
treats for the crowd! There’s going to be a fairground on the Nursery End, complete with a hook-a-duck stall, and a coconut shy! My good friend and Sussex mascot Sid the Shark will be there, and I’m looking forward to having some fun before the cricket starts! The gates open at 12.30 – so get to Lord’s early so you and your family can enjoy all of the entertainment that is on. It’s the perfect way to treat your dad on Father’s Day! I’m hoping my dad (Perky the Panther) will be able to come along, but since his unfortunate accident with the tuba and the alarm clock he hasn’t been able to get out of the house, so we’ll see. Either way, I’ll be there, and I hope you can join me for what I’m sure is going to be a great day! And hopefully the team can perform on the pitch and get us a win that will make the day extra-special!

Until next time,

Welcome to Middlesex County Cricket Club’s brand new website, which we have launched today, so feast your eyes and let us know what you think!

As you can see our new website is very different to and, we believe, much better than our previous site. Over the last couple of years, as a club we have begun to interact more with our members and supporters, especially with the launch, firstly of Facebook in 2010 and then Twitter last summer, and it was felt that we needed to bring our official club website more in line with this.

After asking you all for your comments and ideas, we have, along with our web designers, Oval Cube, come up with what we feel is a modern, fresh and user friendly site, which you will find easy to navigate and fun to visit.

Some of the main NEW features that we think you will enjoy are our brand new and interactive store, the squad and fixtures & results pages, the new Middlesex Cricket Board site and the media section, which will be updated with photos, highlights and other videos for you to enjoy throughout the season. We have also properly integrated the website with both Facebook and Twitter, so it will be a lot easier to jump between all three!

The list of new and exciting features is endless and we don’t want to ruin the surprise, so why don’t you go and investigate and take a look for yourselves – we really hope you like it as much as we do!

As always, we really value your opinion, so after you’ve had a look why not let us know what you think either on Facebook, Twitter or by emailing rebecca.hart@middlesexccc.com

Here’s to a successful 2012 season – enjoy!
